Originally a farming community, Broomfield is thought to have derived its name from the broom corn stalks harvested there. Located halfway between the University of Colorado and downtown Denver, the city is home to over 70,000 people and gives its residents peaceful suburban vibes without cutting off easy access to city life – specifically, Jefferson County in the southwest end and Castle Rock in the southeast direction.
Discover Broomfield: A City With a Rich History
Just like a lot of other areas in the United States, Broomfield was originally inhabited by nomadic tribes. The Apaches, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people would roam its land to reap the meat of different animals.
In 1861, the entrepreneur Adolph Zang bought 4,000 acres of land and had dryland farms, turkey operations, and railroads built all over the area. Broomfield residents also built community institutions from the ground up. For example, they had a local justice who held court in his very own living room. The city then slowly became modernized as more grocery stores, banks, and hotels were established.
